  • This August is the most prolific huckleberry month we have ever seen in Coastal Northern California. (The Mendocino Coast) Many huckleberry branches have clusters with as many 80 to 100 ripe berries.

We have two color varieties here. One has a very dark (almost black) and shiny skin & the other has a dusty blue skin. Both types are bearing fruit like mad!

I prune off the berry laden branches and collect them in bags, then pluck the berries on the porch or in front of the TV in the evenings. I have been picking & cleaning at least 2 to 5 lbs each day in about 3 hours.

The local restaurants & bakeries are stocking up on frozen berries for the year.

  • I can’t find a photographic cross section cut of a blueberry & a huckleberry side by side to make an educated identification using the seeds. I am to believe this is the best way to make an id. I am puzzled. None of the web sites {including yours} that advertize easy id. between them does not provide this.
I apologize if i sound snarky, i am quite computer illiterate & this may contribute to my inability to retrieve said photos. I would be very appreciative if you could provide some!
Thank you in advance, Berry lover

  • Finding a photo like you described may be difficult to find as the huckleberries, in particular, are smaller and softer. Cutting them in half may prove to be difficult if not impossible to do and photograph. But maybe someone can prove me wrong?!

  • I haven’t been able to find reference to the brown huckleberries found in the Western Cascades, near Northbend Washington. Why are they so hard to find?

  • I am sorry! I am not familiar with the brown huckleberry. You might want to direct your question to the local extension agent in your area.
